Water Heater Maintenance

Maintaining your Water Heater is a vital part of a functioning home. Whether you are taking a shower, washing cloths or washing your dishes. Hot water is a luxury we are able to enjoy every day in Raleigh, NC. Here is a list of items that can prolong the life of your water heater. Maintenance is key to any mechanical device.

  1. Flush your water heater – hook up a hose and drain out all the old water inside of the tank. This contains mineral deposits and sediment build up. This is the easiest and most common form of maintenance. If you are handy, you can perform this yourself with a little research on how to do it correctly. If you aren’t comfortable with this, a plumber can help you.
  2.  Check the temperature setting of your water heater, making sure that it’s set at 120 degrees give or take some. The higher you set it, the more it has to go through the heating cycle and it’s more ware on the components.Regular maintenance means good overall visual inspection, checking for leaks, corrosion, anything that you can catch early before it becomes a problem later.
  3. Check the health of the anode rod in the water heater. This rod is simply a sacrificial metal rod put inside of the water heater that draws the minerals and sediment to eat away at that instead of the tank itself. These are important and once the anode rod goes, the water heater will soon follow. If you are handy, you’ll be able to check these with an impact wrench. Once again, if you’d like an inspection or maintenance, give us a call.
